Every year – I’ve lost track of how many it’s been – I attend Stitches West. It is the mecca of yarny events for knitters. My dear friend Mary and I converge, along with thousands of the similarly obsessed, on Santa Clara, California, where the entire Convention Center is filled with booth after booth of yarn vendors.  In addition to shopping, we love to go to classes to learn new techniques. It’s so much fun!

The first night, the Hyatt even decorated its bar with a basket of yarn and a kittie to welcome us all.

By Friday morning a sea of fiber enthusiasts come from far and wide. They amass early, waiting to count down in unison (“10, 9, 8…”) in excited anticipation of the doors opening at 10:00.

Once inside the colors and variety of yarns are nearly overwhelming.

One of the vendors with an incredible range of colors is Stunning String Studio. How about this for a rainbow of colors? These are dyed by Tom Garland.

It can be tricky to narrow down the choices, but having Cindy Garland’s shawl designs on display helps to inspire.

Choosing yarn

I’ll write more in coming days about some fun trends that are hot right now, including kits like the ones Stunning String Studio carries.

Right now I’m off to join friends for some pre- dinner stitching camaraderie.
